Back Bay Mission

Back Bay Mission is located in Biloxi, Mississippi and was founded in 1922.  Its mission statement reads:

"Back Bay Mission, a community ministry of the United Church of Christ, serves the Mississippi Gulf Coast and the wider church community by faithful witness for social justice and compassionate service to the poor and marginalized."

Back Bay Mission fulfills this purpose through emergency assistance, case management, low-income housing rehabilitation and recovery, affordable housing development, outreach and permanent supportive housing for persons experiencing homelessness, and advocacy efforts.  It hosts over 1000 United Church of Christ volunteers annually, primarily to assist in housing rehabilitation efforts in the Gulf Coast community.

The mission of the Council for Health and Human Service Ministries of the United Church of Christ is to sustain and advance the work of healing and service as a ministry of the church of Jesus Christ embodied in its member ministries, the United Church of Christ and the church universal.

Serving More than 1 Million People a Day

CHHSM (it rhymes with “prism”) traces its history back to 1934.  Today CHHSM is an independently governed, non-profit membership association of 76 UCC-related corporations that operate 360 facilities and programs that provide:

Primary and Acute Health Care Services (15 members)

Services to Persons with Disabilities (19 members)

Services to Children, Youth and Families (30 members)

Services to the Aging (294 members)

          Charitable Grant-making Foundations (2 members)

Every day, CHHSM member ministries provide services to more than 1 million people and, annually, expend over $149 million for uncompensated and charity care.

Empowering Those Who Serve

CHHSM provides a variety of services that enhance the capacity of CHHSM member ministries to better serve those in need.  Member Relations offers skills building seminars for emerging and experienced professionals; networking opportunities to strengthen relationships among CHHSM members and within the United Church of Christ; and marketing and communications services.  Leadership Development provides Walking the Talk, a program of customized consulting; special forums for CEOs and Trustees; and governance education.  Business Services include CHHSM Store, a group purchasing plan; a partnership with the Pension Boards-UCC for a variety of low-cost employee insurance and retirement benefits; a partnership with United Church Funds to enable member ministries to maximize their investments; and a partnership with the UCC Financial Development Ministry Team to facilitate planned giving by individuals to CHHSM member ministries.
