Who are SARA’s Children?
They are the children whose lives have been changed forever by the political upheaval in their country.  The present focus of SARA's Children is the children of Ukraine.

Once a thriving country, the Ukraine is now submerged in poverty and disease.  The death rate outpaces the birth rate.   Children are denied basic human needs.

Orphaned children in the Ukraine are in dire need of our assistance.

  • Adequate medical care is still only a dream for many.

  • Sanitation is barely minimal.

  • Toys are virtually non-existent.

  • Children cannot even imagine what it is like to use outdoor play equipment.

We have more than enough resources.  Sharing America's Resources Abroad is something that we can do to make life better for these children.  We can begin to make a difference in their lives.  SARA's Children are not someone else's responsibility.  SARA's Children are our children!

Through SARA (Sharing America’s Resources Abroad) you can share your resources with SARA's Children.  To find out how, please contact the Ohio Conference office at 800-282-0740; write SARA's Children, Ohio Conference UCC, 6161 Busch Boulevard, Suite 95, Columbus OH 43229-2547; or email ohioucc@ocucc.org.

If you would like a presentation on this ministry in your church, please contact Sue Quellhorst at 614-766-2319 or Stephen Szilagyi at 440-593-2021.

Sue Quellhorst, "mother" of SARA's Children, with children who live at the government-run orphanage in the mountains in Ukraine.  The kids are enjoying their first ride on the new merry-go-round provided by First UCC, Marion, Ohio.

SARA's Children will capture your heart.

SARA's Children will challenge your sense of mission.

SARA's Children will give you tangible ways to revitalize your ministry.

Let us tell you about SARA's Children

Sue Quellhorst, founder of SARA's Children, has been to the Ukraine and has met SARA's Children.  She is eager to talk to people in your congregation, perhaps in your women's organization, to tell the story.

To arrange for Sue to come to your church, call her at 614-766-2319.  For further information about SARA or SARA's Children, please contact:

The Needs of SARA's Children

The Erdeyi Home in Debrecen, Hungary is similar to the Ronald McDonald Houses in the U.S.  Children from the Ukraine, Romania and Slovakia find respite care.  The home needs toys, clothing, shoes, vitamins, Tylenol, as well as financial support.

The church orphanage would like to have a mill to make sunflower oil.  This commodity is useful and exportable in this region.  The mill would cost between $3,000 and $5,000.  The orphanage also needs vitamins, infant formula and clothing for girls ages 2 - 14.

There are three existing gypsy congregations in Transcarpathia.  $250 per month per church would provide support, including operating and upkeep costs.  $100 per month per church would pay the salary of a teacher to teach reading and writing.  Infant formula and vitamins are needed.  There are more than 9,000 gypsies in this region.  $12 - 15,000 would build another church.

In the state-run orphanage, most of the children (ages 3-20) are mentally or physically handicapped.  They need toys, swing sets, sweat suits, vitamins, food supplements, pots and pans.  The presence of a U.S.-trained nurse, M.D., or qualified mental retardation professional for six months at a time would work wonders.

The hospitals in Munkacs need at least two industrial-sized washers and portable x-ray machines.  This is the area where the first scoliosis operation was performed in May 1998.

SARA's Children need shoes.  Over 15,000 pairs of shoes have been transported already.

Some Ways You Can Help
  • Challenge yourself to collect a number of bottles of children's vitamins.

  • Raise the money to pay the salary of a teacher for one year.

  • Perhaps your church could challenge several others to work with you to buy washing machines and x-ray units for hospitals.
  • Financial support is always needed and always wisely used.
